Click read more to read a brief interview with the mother of a child with an Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

Autism is a developmental disability present from birth, (although not immediately obvious) and lasting throughout life. (although changes occur and progress is possible) . It is caused by dysfunction in the brain, and the core difficulty in Autism is social. People with Autism find it hard to understand the world around them, especially other people.

I have a boy with ASD. He was diagnosed when he was 3 years old. He had communication difficulties and was obsessed with spinning, that is what concerned me, and went for the assessment.  Mentally, it was hard to accept that my little boy had this condition, but as we got to know more, and with Allah’s help, we were put in touch with all the specialists that could help, and things progressed very well.

Now he is eight years old mashallah, and things are very different! He has developed good use of language, has made friends and is learning good social skills Alhamdulillah.
I was particularly anxious when he had to start Madressa! It was his first year that the Learning Support Department (LSD) had started, and it was the best thing! My son got one to one support, and I felt assured that he has support. Now Alhamdulillah the LSD has settled him so well mashallah that 2 years on he has support in only one lesson, and his exams results are very good.

LSD has various support aids, like Arabic alphabet puzzles, story boards for Tareeqh and so on. With the right approach ASD children can make a lot of progress, and we have duas from our imams which give us strength and hope.
