In more detail:

Talk about what we do when we break our fast at Sunset

  • Play
  • Break our fast with dates
  • Eat Yummy food

Then ask them to sing the Juicy dates song:

(It starts with 5 juicy dates but we can start with 4 to shorten the rhyme- same tune as 5 little speckled frogs)

5 little juicy dates

Sat on a shiny plate

During the month of Ramadhan, YUM YUM

Then at the end of day

Eat one before you pray

Then there will be 4 more juicy dates, YUM YUM.

Then mention the Qur’an and that it came from the heavens on this month and that we recite it a lot and show them the Qur’an, that it is written in Arabic. (Your child can recite a Sura for the class at this point)

Muslims follow a lunar calendar which means that we follow the moon every month.

The lunar month (moon) has 29 or 30 days every month.

Shall we count to 30? Then make them all count to 30.

Can you see the moon in the classroom?  (Someone can be standing in another corner of the room with a crescent moon and the children can look around for it)

This is the crescent moon and it means it is the beginning of the month.  At the end of the month of Ramadhan, Muslims look for the crescent moon in the night sky to find out if it the start of the new month.

The start of this new month is known as EID and Muslims all round the world celebrate on ths day.  They where nice clothes like you are all wearing today.  Many muslims go in the morning for special Eid prayers.

And the rest of the day is just like Christmas or Diwali.  Muslims give presents to each other and we have delicious food and give each other cards and paint our hands with henna.
