A Short Play on the Battle of Badr (10 mins)
SCENE 1
Iman and Zahra are sitting and talking on the side, in front of the curtains
Iman: You know I was wondering the other day how the Imam is going to be able to change the whole world with only 313 followers?
Zahra: that is not how it is going to be. The 313 will be only the first people who will answer the call of the Imam. After that he will be joined by thousands of people. But think about it this way, even if there were only 313 followers look at what happened in Badr and the way the Muslims won that fight.
Iman: The victory in the battle of Badr is really something to think about, it was a miracle. The Prophet was worried about the Muslims, as it was probably the most important battle in Islam. It was the first battle of Islam and on top of that there were only 313 Muslims compared to the disbelievers who were all equipped with weapons. The night before the battle the prophet was praying to the Almighty for their victory.
SCENE 2
Curtain opens
Show the Prophet standing on his prayer mat
Prophet: "O Allah! The proud and arrogant Quraysh are already here disobeying you and belying Your Messenger. O Allah! I am waiting for Your victory which You have promised me. I beseech You Allah to defeat them
Prophet: O Allah these are the Quraish. They have come with all their arrogance and boastfulness, trying to discredit Your Apostle. O Allah, I ask You to humiliate them tomorrow. O Allah, if this Muslim band will perish today, You shall not be worshipped.
Curtain closes
Zahra: Even though the Muslims were so weak compared to the disbelivers, they still won the battle and the main reason for that was their unshakeable faith and that they had the truth on their side. As this was the first battle of Islam no-one had seen Imam Ali in battle. In the battle of Badr, however, everyone got to see his bravery
Iman: Yea. I remember watching 'The Message' and they showed the battle. It started of with one-to-one combat right?
Zahra: yea
Curtain opens
Utbah ibn Rabi: Oh Muslims, I bring myself Utbah ibn Rabi, my brother Shaibah and my son Walid so bring to us someone equal to us.
Narrator: The Muslims send forward three people – Auf Muaf and Abdullah ibn Rawaha from the Ansars of Madinah.
Utbah ibn Rabi: Oh Ansars go back and bring our brothers from Makkah, you are not equal to us.
Narrator: The Prophet then sent Ubaidah, Hamza and Ali to fight.
Curtain closes
Zahra: Yea and after his death the Kuffar attacked the Muslim army and the fight itself began.
Iman: Remember the time when Bilal saw Omayya?
Zahra: Omayya? Bilal's previous owner?
Iman: Yea. Omayya really tortured Bilal after he converted to Islam. So when Bilal saw Omayya he ran towards him and they fought until Bilal killed Omayya.
Zahra: After Omayya's death Abu Jahl was also killed. As both of them were the leaders of the army, their death caused the kuffar army to get really scared and they thought that they would lose so they started running for their lives.
Iman: The Muslims started running behind them and 70 of the kuffar were taken prisoners.
Zahra: And even with everything the Meccans had done to the Muslims in the past the Prophet treated them with kindness and a number of them converted to Islam after that.
Iman: the Prophet's mercy was legendary! However, despite the Prophet's merciful treatment towards the prisoners of Badr, there was hatred and rage in the hearts of the Mekkans and Uhud was a direct result of Badr. All other battle's in the Prophet's life were also in some or the other way a result of what happened in Badr.
Zahra: not just the battles in the Prophet's time but even after the Prophet, for eg. The battle of Karbala, when the ladies were in the court of Yazid in Sham, just before Bibi Zainab gave her speech, Yazid said a small poem in his drunken state in which he said that:
Curtains open
SCENE OF YAZID
Yazid: Would that my elders in Badr had seen
The Khazraj being speared, and wailing
They would have rejoiced and celebrated
And said "O Yazid, well done!"
Bani Hashim had played with power
For no news nor wahi was ever revealed
I would not be from among the Khandaf if I did not avenge Bani Ahmad for what they have done.
Iman: Ya Allah, these people should really be cursed for all eternity. How can a human being be so proud about something as vile as killing and torturing another human being forget the Prophet's family.
Zahra: I know! Inshallah when the Imam comes we will have peace in our society. Although we will have to fight for it, we will eventually attain it! Going back to what were talking about before. If in the battle of Badr 313 Muslims fought and won then even if the Imam has 313 followers, by the will of Allah, the Muslims will be victorious.
